Preparatory notes, in German, for the conference on ‘The Freudian Thing’ : Jacques Lacan
On www.Freud2Lacan.com is the following background :
Dany Nobus “Although the notes exist in German, there is no evidence that Lacan delivered his speech in German. Lacan could read German fluently, yet his spoken German would not have been good enough, or he would have required a fully written text in German, which doesn’t exist.
What we have here is in all likelihood a German hand‐out Lacan prepared for his German‐speaking audience, which he would have passed on before the actual lecture.
The text itself was in all likelihood translated from Lacan’s (dictated?) French by Wladimir Granoff, whose second language was German (after his native Russian).”
“Notes in German prepared for the lecture on The Freudian Thing” was translated from German by Geneviève Morel and Franz Kaltenbeck, and published in Ornicar? No 42, pages 7‐11. Apparently there are four versions of La Chose freudienne: the preparatory notes, the actual lecture in Vienna, the text that was published in L’Évolution psychiatrique; XXI, fasicule 1 (Jan‐Mar 1956): pp. 225‐ 52, and the seventeenth essay in the Écrits published in 1966, which is an expanded version of the lecture given at the Vienna Neuropsychiatric Clinic on November 7, 1955. Reference by Jacques Lacan to this text
Jacques Lacan refers to ‘primal thing’ in Seminar IV : 16th January 1957.
It is from the present point where we are in the analysis that the subject formulates forthe past, organises a primal dramatic situation, in such a way that is nonetheless inscribed in their present speech, in their present powers of symbolisation, and we locate, through the progress of analysis, something like the primal thing.

This text foreshadows many of his arguments given on 16th January 1957.
