Background:

Lecture given in October 1967 at the Centre Hospitalier du Vinatier in Lyon. The Écrits : 1966 : Jacques Lacan , published in 1966, gave rise to many invitations to talk about it. Jacques Lacan sometimes accepted the invitations and went to various provincial towns and also visited Italy where he gave three lectures. (Information on their publication, Autres Écrits: 2001 : Jacques Lacan or here )  To quote, Jacques-Alain Miller’s Preface to ‘My teaching’:  Jacques Lacan found himself faced with audiences who were not familiar with what he called his ‘same old story’. He improvised, described his difficulties with his colleagues, and expounded the concepts of psychoanalysis in the most accessible form.

The Asile du Vinatier, created by the law of 30th June 1838 that provided for mental asylum in each of its Départements, suffered for a long time from its negative image and was known as ‘l’Aile de Bron’. Reformed after the Liberation of France, it had already become the Centre hospitalier du Vinatier when Lacan visited it. The establishment is now the Rhône-Alpes region’s main psychiatric centre.

The philosopher Henri Maldiney, who was born in 1912 and who taught at the Université de Lyon for a long time, had links with the phenomenological movement. His work concentrated mainly on poetry, the fine arts and Western and Chinese landscapes.
