ORIENTATION – 8
“Let’s suppose that this situation entails for the subject the impossibility of assuming the realization of the signifier father at the symbolic level. What’s he left with? He’s left with the image the paternal function is reduced to. It’s an image which isn’t inscribed in any triangular dialectic, but whose function as model, as specular alienation, nevertheless gives the subject a fastening point and enables him to apprehend himself on the imaginary plane.
[…]
The alienation here is radical, it isn’t bound to a nihilating signified, as in a certain type of rivalrous relation with the father, but to a nihilation of the signifier. The subject will have to bear the weight of this real, primitive dispossession of the signifier and adopt compensation for it […] over the course of his life, through a series of purely conformist identifications with characters who will give him the feeling for what one has to do to be a man.”
Jacques Lacan, The Psychoses, Book III, 1955-1956, Ed. Miller J.-A., Trans. with notes Grigg R., W.W. Norton and Co., New York, 1993, pp. 204 – 205.

“So, in one direction, we are led to try to refine the concept of neurosis, but on the other hand, and this is the opposite consequence, you are led to a generalisation of psychosis. And Lacan followed that lead. This generalisation of psychosis means that you don’t have the true Name-of-the- Father. […] The Name-of-the-Father is a predicate […] it is always one special element amongst others which for a special subject functions as a Name-of-the-Father.”

In Psychoanalytical Notebooks 26, p. 45.

How true!!! The validity of that assertion can be compared to what currently happens online, with hook-up sites and porn sites where you can upload your own images & videos: manifestations of masculinity are reduced to size !!!
